Booklist, bookshop & uniforms
The kiasu urge to 'buy everything now' is strong, but most of it is school-specific and waits until your place is confirmed. Here's what's actually involved, and the one purchase worth getting right: the bag.

How booklists and bookshops work
After your child is allocated a school, the school releases its own booklist for Primary 1, textbooks, workbooks and stationery, and appoints an authorised bookshop to sell them. Buying from the appointed vendor ensures you get the correct titles and editions. You don't need to hunt down books yourself.
Uniforms
Each school appoints an authorised uniform supplier so sizes and specifications are correct. Some schools run fitting and sales on-site; others point you to the supplier's shop or online store. Buy a size with a little growing room, and label everything.
The timing
Most book and uniform sales happen in November and December, before the January start, through in-person collection days and/or online ordering. The exact dates, vendors and order portals are school-specific, so once your place is confirmed, watch the school's website and notices closely.
The one thing worth getting right: the bag
Among all the gear, the school bag is what affects your child's body every day. Books are heavy for a six-year-old, so choose for support, not looks:
- Low empty weight, the bag itself shouldn't be heavy before anything goes in.
- Wide, padded shoulder straps and a supportive back panel.
- Pack to the timetable, only the books needed each day, and check the bag together each night.
- Teach them to use both straps, every day.
Common questions
Where do I get the booklist? Is it the same for every school? +
No. Each school releases its own booklist for its levels and appoints its own authorised bookshop, so booklists differ from school to school. You'll get yours from the school you're allocated, usually around November to December, via the school's website or at orientation.
When can I buy uniforms and books? +
Typically from November to December, before the January start, through collection days at the school and/or online ordering. Exact dates and vendors are set by each school, so watch for the school's notices once your place is confirmed.
Do I buy uniforms at the school or from a supplier? +
Schools appoint an authorised uniform supplier so the specifications are correct. Some hold fitting and sales at the school; others direct you to the supplier's store or online shop. Follow your school's instructions rather than buying generic uniforms.
We're on financial assistance. Are books and uniforms covered? +
Yes. The MOE Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) covers textbooks and school uniforms (along with other items) for eligible Singapore Citizen families, collected through the school bookshop. See our costs guide for eligibility.
Any tips on choosing a school bag? +
Their bag will often be heavier than it looks once books go in, so prioritise low empty weight, wide padded straps and a supportive back panel over fashion. Pack only what the timetable needs each day, and teach your child to use both straps. Try a loaded bag on before deciding.
